Landing a Job As a Medical Transcriptionist
In these days of downsizing, the health care field is one field that seems to be holding its own. For those of you who are looking at the possibility of a job working from home, Medical Transcription could be the job you are looking for. There are many reputable transcription outsourcing companies looking to hire good employees. I have been an MT for 5 years now. Becoming an MT is not an easy thing to do. It’s one of those catch-22 jobs where you need experience, but how are you going to get it if no one will hire you? From my own experience, here are 4 steps to getting and keeping a medical transcription job.

1. Training. You can’t skip this step. You won’t even be considered for an MT position without the proper training. The outsourcing companies want to know they are hiring someone who has the basic knowledge needed for the job. Once hired, they will fine-tune your skills to suit their company, but you have to show them that you have either past experience or MT training. There are several ways to get your training. Your local community college probably offers Medical Transcription classes. Some of these will be in class and others will be online. Another option is home study programs. These programs are excellent, and can be more in depth than the community college classes. One of the best ones is Career Step. A lot of the outsourcing companies look to hire students who have graduated from Career Step. Another good one is Future MT. I trained with At Home Professions. An online search will give you lots of options for obtaining your MT training.
2. Applying. Ok, your training is behind you, and you are ready to go out there and find a job. Be sure you have a resume prepared. Your training school may help you prepare a resume. If not, you can hire a resume specialist or look up examples of MT resume’s online to use as a guide. Now comes the hard part. Getting your foot in the door is hard to do. There are online sources for finding job listings for MT’s. One internet source is MT Star, but there are many others. Just Google medical transcription jobs. Usually, the desired qualifications for the job are on the outsourcing company’s web page. Look for those requiring less experience and apply for those.
Send out letters and business cards to all the local medical professionals offering your MT services. Be sure to detail your medical specialty, if you have one. This may lead to a job filling in while their regular transcriptionist is on vacation or it may lead to a full-time job. Either way, you are gaining experience to add to your resume.
Network with other MT’s in your area. They may know of job openings that you wouldn’t learn of otherwise. They can also act as a reference if you happen to apply to the company they are working for. One thing I have definitely learned, is that MT’s are a close knit group and they are always happy to help one of their own. You will need that resource some time in the future, so value the MT network you build.
Some of the schools will help you land your first job. Some companies prefer to hire graduates from the Career Step program. Other training programs also may have affiliations with outsourcing companies. This is something you may want to ask in advance of your training. It can certainly be helpful in obtaining your first job.

3. Equipment. As an MT you will need equipment. You will need a computer, specific medical software, a foot pedal, and speakers. In some cases, you can rent the equipment from the company for a fee. This is a very good option, because the computer is already configured for the company. If you own your own computer, you will have to meet certain requirements and add the required software. If you work as an independent MT you will have to furnish all of the equipment yourself. You will need medical reference books and of course the basics such as a desk, chair, and office supplies.
4. Keeping Your Job. Once you are hired, you want to be a professional. Sometimes working at home makes this harder than you might think. You must be committed to giving the company however many hours you have agreed to. It is easy to be distracted by kids, spouse, animals, phone; the list could go on forever. It is a good idea to have a cell phone that your employer can call if they need to reach you, and ignore other phones. Let the answering machine pick up those calls and you can return them when you are not working. Outsourcing companies have high standards, and you are expected to be able to meet these standards. Quality and quantity are the two most important components of an MT job. This is a production job, and you will not make your production if you are constantly stopping to attend to something else.

The patient could be at risk, if the medical transcriptionist accidentally types wrong medication or wrong diagnosis and the doctor did not review the document for accuracy. Both the doctor and the transcriptionist play an important role to make sure the transcribed document is correct and accurate.
